Joel & Marissa Abels

Joel & Marissa Abels:

Joel and Marissa Abels, have lived and worked full time in Uganda, Africa since September 2019. They currently live there with their 3 small children and have dedicated themselves. Joel’s first visit to Uganda was in 2013, when he worked with Jason and Brenda Sommer to construct an Aquaponics System. This journey lead him to a life-trajectory of using his tangible skills, to advocate & teach others to learn and grow theirs. Joel & Marissa were married in 2018 and together— they committed to living in Uganda, where they are raising a growing family and faithfully meeting the needs of this rural community! They continue their growth and mentorship with the community— as a young married family, tackling life together!

Joel is the Projects Director in Uganda for Develop Sustainability 501c3 Organization, and holds a place on the Develop Sustainability Board of Directors. His responsibilities includes managing construction, mentorship and farming projects at 3 sites in Uganda — and span out into all of the many ways that he is immersed in the needs of the organization and the community.

While she is a full-time mother of 3, Marissa also assists with team planning & guest coordination — and she has a special knack for making delicious food. She shares her amazing culinary skills, as she teaches our local staff how to prepare delectable meals for our staff and visitors.

Together, Joel and Marissa are board members for Develop Sustainability Org. and Bethany Christian School. They have immersed their growing family into life within rural Uganda, and continue to give their lives to the building up of others. They look forward to more years of using their skills, passions and resources to build sustainability, where it is lacking. Their commitment is valuable and they are a valued part of the Develop Sustainability Team.
